To strengthen our Global Engineering team, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of Project Engineering Lead.
In this position, part of the Global Engineering Project Delivery Team, you will support large strategic CAPEX expansion projects for one of the biggest Bio-Pharma plants in Belgium and contribute to the future of UCB internationally.
Working closely with the Business teams, you will be leading a team of engineers incl. third parties (international level engineering companies) and be responsible for delivering the overall engineering package from concept to handover.
Key responsibilities of the Project Engineering Lead:
- You are responsible for managing large strategic projects, ensuring a smooth project design & execution by leading and coordinating multiple functions, managing, and mitigating risks, cost & schedule, communicating project progress, issues, and solutions to management and stakeholders.
- You are responsible for all design deliverables, either developed internally or by approved 3rd party engineering service providers, ensuring adequate front-end engineering and scope development, along with overseeing the design efforts to meet project requirements and for the execution phase till handover to users for PQ activities.
- You provide and maintain excellence for design, construction methods and execution that delivers the companies ambitions on safety and sustainability.
- You lead the alignment with business on their needs, solutions, and prioritization, acting as first point of contact in case of critical issues.
- You ensure the engagement of all functions, like Project Controls, C&Q, Procurement, EHS, Finance to support projects.
- You oversee several UCB and 3rd party contractor discipline leads.
- You are accountable for alignment with technical & Project management standards including Safety and Green aspects.
- You lead project planning, reporting, achievements and the development of key performance indicators establishing a continuous improvement process.
- You define the project delivery strategy, processes, and tools via a Project Execution Plan.

You will contribute by:
- Providing leadership with conceptual design studies to confirm strategic decisions for expansions and manufacturing network efficiency improvements.
- Review and confirming planning & cost estimates for individual projects using internal and external benchmarks as well as historic data.
- Partnering with engineering firms to ensure proper support in delivering the projects.
- Defining the projects resources requirements.
- Consolidating and reviewing the deliverables (e.g. URS, Technical Specifications).
- Ensuring strong communication with stakeholders and project team.
Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:
Education
- Master’s degree in Engineering (Process engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent).
MUST HAVE :
- You have an experience in (MSc) Physical, Chemical or Biological Science, Technical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience with construction of a large scale GMP or food manufacturing facility.
- You show 15+ years of general engineering experience including 10+ years’ experience within bio-pharmaceutical production, Drug Substance Manufacturing and/or Finished Goods Manufacturing.
- You prove a major experience in Stakeholder’s management incl. Executive level. and in leading, delivering complex and multi-disciplined EPCM projects.
- Capability to establish and coordinate service contracts with 3rd party engineering service providers
- Good understanding of the pharmaceutical industry incl. R&D, manufacturing, …
- Strong knowledge of EHS (Environment, Health and Safety), Commissioning, Qualification or Verification and Quality aspects.
- Full professional proficiency in French and English (both oral and written).

- Experience in large and complex projects as well as both formal and informal leadership / coordination
- Experience with EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) and EPCM (Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management) contracting models.
- Ability to share good practices and knowledge.
- Excellent communication skills (able to present to Management) and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Broad Leadership experience for the management of internal and external resources.
- Strong technical skills and the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner.
- Ability to apply previous learning and ideas to new situations, projects and teams, developing creative solutions to manage risk to a reasonably practicable level.
- Ability to communicate effectively and make presentations with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively and efficiently in a team-based environment. Able to both take direction and mentor other team members.
- Open to travel to support UCB strategic international projects.
